Overview

Pilates classes in Kolkata: formats, areas, how to choose

Everything on offer in the city, in one place: the three formats, what each costs, where the studios actually are, and how to pick one in an evening — including when the right answer is not us.

    The short answer

    • Kolkata has three kinds of Pilates on offer: group mat classes, group reformer classes, and private one-to-one sessions. They differ more in attention and price than in method.
    • The studios cluster in the south of the city — Ballygunge and Gariahat hold most of them: Renovo (private one-to-one only), Pulse, Reflex & Reform, Pilates The CORE Studio and Blissful Monkey (group formats).
    • Pick by constraint, not by brand: budget points to group mat; a specific injury, postnatal return or need for full attention points to one-to-one. The private vs group guide does the arithmetic.
    • Before choosing a studio, read review counts alongside ratings and ask what training the instructor has — the comparison page lays the studios side by side.

    The three formats, plainly

    Group mat classes

The cheapest and most available format — a room, mats, one instructor, often run inside gyms as well as dedicated studios. Real exercise and the least expensive way to learn the basics. The trade-off is attention: in a full room, form corrections reach you a few times an hour.

    Group reformer classes

Small classes on the spring-resisted machines, capped by how many reformers the studio owns. More expensive than mat because the equipment is a serious capital cost. The reformer vs mat explainer covers what the machine actually changes — including how springs can make work easier, not just harder.

    Private one-to-one sessions

One instructor, one client, the whole hour programmed to you. The most expensive tier because nothing is shared. This is the only format Renovo teaches — a deliberate choice, because it is the format that works when there is an injury, a postnatal return or a body that group classes have not served well.

    Where the classes actually are

Almost everything is in the south. Ballygunge and Gariahat between them hold the city's dedicated studios: Renovo Pilates (Ballygunge Park Road, private one-to-one reformer), Blissful Monkey Studio (Ballygunge, yoga and Pilates groups), Pulse Pilates (Gariahat, group reformer, the widest hours in the area), Pilates The CORE Studio (near Gariahat) and Reflex & Reform Pilates (group reformer). North and central Kolkata are mostly served by mat classes inside general gyms rather than dedicated studios.

If you are in or near Ballygunge itself, the Ballygunge page maps every option in the neighbourhood with walking distances.

How to choose in one evening

    • 1. Decide the format first. Budget-led and generally healthy → group mat. Want equipment work at a group price → group reformer. Injury, surgery recovery, postnatal, a diagnosis, or you simply want the hour to be about you → one-to-one.
    • 2. Shortlist by geography. You will not sustain a class that fights the traffic. Two studios you can reach beat five you cannot.
    • 3. Read reviews for count and recency, not just stars. A 5.0 on ten reviews is weaker evidence than a 4.7 on forty, and a studio whose last review is months old is telling you something too.
    • 4. Ask two questions before paying: what training does the person teaching me have, and what are the package expiry and cancellation terms. Any good studio answers both plainly.
    • 5. Buy the smallest thing first. One drop-in or one single session. Never start with the biggest package on the board.

    Where Renovo fits, honestly

We teach one format only: private one-to-one reformer sessions in Ballygunge, at ₹1,700 a session with 4- and 8-session packages. No group classes, no mat classes, closed Sundays. If what you want is a lively room and the lowest price per class, one of the group studios above is genuinely the better product for you.

If what you need is attention — because something hurts, because you are returning from birth or surgery, or because group rooms have never worked for you — that is the situation this studio was built for, and the cost guide will tell you exactly what it costs before you ever talk to us.
